The Law Show – November 18: Host Liability, Holiday Parties, and Cannabis Legalization

Joe Murphy, Q.C., joined Jim Gordon for the November 18th episode of The Law Show. In this episode they focused their conversation on host liability, specifically when hosting a holiday party.

Joe explained a host’s liability (may it be a person, company, or an establishment that serves alcohol) should a guest leave an event impaired and hurt themselves or others. He discusses the risk of liability of both alcohol and cannabis related injuries as a result of an event, and lists steps hosts can take to avoid being found liable should an incident arise. Joe also raises concern about the ambiguity of liability concerning cannabis, as the law hasn’t yet established how the legalization of cannabis will affect impaired driving.
