Paralympic Torch Lighting

September 7th marked the start of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio and to celebrate we screened the opening ceremony at our Resource Centre. Even the drizzly rain didn’t keep people from joining in to celebrate the athletic prowess of people with different abilities.

You would never know that the opening ceremonies were, at one point, in peril of not happening, as Rio struggled with finding the funds to hold them. You certainly couldn’t tell based on the event. It was a spectacular performance full of beautiful art and expressions of triumph through adversity. It highlighted the need for more accessibility within our communities and celebrated the successes we’ve already had. People said it rivaled the Olympic ceremony, even exceeded it in beauty and strength of character.

All I know is that it was a fantastic afternoon spent with some wonderful people. It made me wish these games were on every year!

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this day even more special. There’s nothing quite like sharing a unifying experience, and celebrating together to cheer on our Canadian Paralympic Athletes!
