Kristina Shelden, Resource Coordinator, PIRC

Last month I attended the monthly “Girl Talk” gathering at the Personal Injury Resource Centre.  “Girl Talk” is a women’s empowerment group for women (17+) who live with a personal injury.

There’s nothing quite like that feeling when you gasp out, “Ah! You, too???”

I still remember when I was a little girl and making friends for the first time. Whenever that comment burst forth from one of our lips, we knew we’d found someone that we could connect with. Someone we could understand and who understood us.

Upcoming Session of Girl Talk: Wed., May 7th @ 7pm at the Personal Injury Resource Centre, 908 West King Edward

We’ve had a few sessions of Girl Talk now, and although I started out attending these sessions in a more professional capacity as host to the meetings, I’ve found I’ve already made some fast and solid friendships. I have a personal injury myself, and it’s wonderfully comforting to spend time with women in a supportive environment who can identify with and appreciate my unique circumstances in their own ways.

The name “Girl Talk” is right. We’re a bunch of ladies who’ve gathered together and gab about what’s important to us. The conversation flows in whatever direction we want it to. From travelling with a disability, to the dating scene and love lives, to our challenges and successes; we share and communicate what we’re going through and focus on creating a strength and faith in ourselves to remind us that we can handle what ever is put in front of us.

This last session was a great. I found my head bobbing up and down many times in recognition of similar experiences. We spoke of surgeries we’ve undergone, challenges we’ve had within the health system and strategies on how to deal with them, and what it’s like to deal with ignorance and acceptance in the community. Even dating and love came up again, (ooof course, we’re girls, aren’t we?).

I can’t tell you what it means to me to share this with other people. To know I am not alone, and to find myself submerged in a wealth of laughter amongst new friends.

If you’re interested in joining one of our monthly sessions, or would like more information, please join our Facebook group: Girl Talk Vancouver, or contact the group’s organizer and facilitator Jenna Reed-Cote, at [email protected].
